CLASS OF 2009 VISITS COLUMBUS IN MAY

Leadership Ohio Class of 2009, May 2009 – Government in Ohio

The Leadership 2009 class met in Columbus to learn more about state government and the role of all Ohioans regarding participation and involvement. Most of day one was spent in the Supreme Court Building where leaders from different departments and government branches came to the group and provided information and an overview of their general responsibilities.

The day started with Kathleen Luikart from the Legislative Service Commission who talked about how a Bill becomes a Law.  From there the group heard from David Farrell, Director of Elections from the Secretary of State’s office.  Then Ray Fuller, Outreach and Education Specialist from the office of the Ohio Consumers’ Counsel spoke followed by Arnie Schropp, First Assistant Inspector General.  Be sure to visit www.watchdog.ohio.gov.

In the afternoon the group heard from Theresa Lynn Carter, General Counsel from the Treasurer of State, Lori Brown, Assistant Disciplinary Counsel from the Supreme Court Office of Disciplinary Counsel and Judge Peggy Bryant, Tenth District Court of Appeals from the Judicial Branch.

But no trip to the Supreme Court would be complete without a tour.  The group was treated to a visit to the court rooms and visited the museum which is full of information and history. The group also walked to the Statehouse and visited the meeting rooms for the Senate and the House of Representatives.

At the end of the day, the group was treated to a reception at BHDP Architects and the “Excellence in Leadership” award went to Thomas Lindsey, City Attorney for Upper Arlington, who has not only provided hospitality and leadership but planned the Columbus Leadership Ohio class the past several years.

Friday the group met on the 31st floor of the Verne Riffe Center where the sunshine offered a great view of the city. Norm Chagnon, Executive Director of Third Frontier Commission provided information on his department and their work with emerging and developing technology. Alicia Reece, Assistant Director from Travel and Tourism Division spoke and Wade Rakes, Director of Public Liaison from the Office of Governor Ted Strickland discussed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and Working on Boards and Commissions.  Next was Robert Boggs, Director from the Department of Agriculture and then on to Howard Tibbs, Researcher from the Ohio Energy Office.  William Murdock, Director, Urban Development was next and suggested visiting www.clean.ohio.gov.  The day concluded with Deb Shear, Department of Development.

Next month the group will gather in Marietta for Ohio History.
